Did you know that there is an entire month dedicated to celebrating Earth?  In 1970, Earth Day was established in the United States as a way to bring focus and attention to the environmental movement and would be recognized on April 22nd.  By 1990, Earth Day became a worldwide holiday which gave way to Earth Week and eventually Earth Month.  Now, during the month of April, people from around the world observe, perform and acknowledge different ways to take care of and preserve our precious planet.

If you have been thinking about going green and adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle at home, this is the perfect time to start making those changes.  Here are ten ways you can make a difference right at home at Lakeside.

Go paperless by paying your bills online and opting out of junk mail.

Switch to non-toxic cleaning products.

Buy a reusable water bottle.

Whenever you leave your apartment, make sure TVs, computers and lights are turned off or unplugged.

Upcycle your food scraps.

Recycle and reuse everyday items.

Burn soy candles over petroleum-based candles.

Swap your nonrenewable plastic packaging body wash with a bar of soap.

Wash laundry in cold water instead of hot.

Grow your own herb garden.

Embracing an eco-friendly lifestyle doesn’t have to be hard or scary.  These ten simple ideas are a great way to jumpstart your GO-GREEN initiative right at home.  Soon enough you’ll be making a difference in your community and environment well past the month of April.
